Lisa Barkley, the latest featured block captain, told me about the game she played on Pearl Street: Dead Block (a.k.a. Deadbox; Skully). I have started to make a video about the game once played by kids all over Philadelphia. Does anyone have any photographs or videos of people playing that they’d like to share? I love the idea of occupying our streets with games!

Them That Do is an ongoing portrait and multimedia project by Lori Waselchuk about Philadelphia's block captains.
The title of this blog came from Juanita Hatton, a veteran and irrepressible block captain living in West Philadelphia. Juanita works with all her neighbors but has seen her share of apathy and resistance during her 38 years of volunteering. Juanita persists, however, whether or not she has support. She describes the three kinds of people she meets in the world, "There are them that do, them that don't and them that don't give a darn."
